Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center $375,000 in new federal funds for vision research. The funds will be distributed by the National Eye Institute.

“UTHSC continues to provide some of the best research and treatment available to effectively combat and treat eye diseases,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help provide doctors, researchers and scientists at UTHSC with the tools they need to help study eye diseases and visual disorders to help people in Tennessee and across the country.”

As part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute’s mission is to “conduct and support research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind.”
