MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - Tennessee's Achievement School District says it plans to take over three low-performing schools in the Memphis community of Frayser.

Superintendent Chris Barbic said Monday that the statewide Achievement School District will work with Memphis City Schools and Frayser community leaders when it begins operating Corning Elementary, Frayser Elementary and Westside Middle schools when the 2012-2013 school year starts next August.

All three schools are currently rated in the bottom 5 percent of student achievement in the state.

Barbic says the takeover will positively affect the student feeder pattern in Frayser.

The district will take over the schools for five years, hoping to elevate their performance to the state's top 25 percent.

The Achievement School District was created as part of Tennessee's response to the federal Race to the Top initiative.

Here is the solution. Parents who give a darn and go to parent teacher conferences, answer letters sent home, check homework, etc. Secondly, we need honest, informed and EDUCATED teachers. For some reason we are short on both these, parents who care and teachers who teach and don't cheat.
