MEMPHIS, TN - Despite new Tennessee legislation planning for school consolidation, the Shelby County Commission is moving ahead with plans to create its own unified school board, and the applications are pouring in.

At least 110 people have applied for positions on the 25 member board. Commissioner Mike Carpenter says they have impressive resumes and degrees.

Three sitting Memphis City School Board Members have applied: Martavius Jones, Stephanie Gatewood and Patrice Robinson. Carpenter says Betty Mallott requested an application but has not yet returned it.

Carpenter says citizens may be pleased to learn most of the applicants have no background in politics.

“There are very few folks who have ever run for political office before, these are political novices, who haven't been candidates, who aren't looking for a stepping stone, but who are really looking to serve,” said Commissioner Carpenter. “And so I'm very encouraged by the applicants we're getting and look forward to interviewing, seating them and hopefully seeing them serve.”

The application deadline is March 22nd. The commission will interview candidates on March 23rd.
