MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - Shelby County municipalities are moving forward with efforts to form their own school districts before the Memphis and county systems merge.

On Tuesday education consultants told Germantown officials that a local school district is feasible, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Similar reports were recently provided to Bartlett and Collierville.

The reports all found that the cities could fund their own districts by increasing the property tax rate or the sales tax.

The various districts could consolidate some functions like transportation and custodial work. They could also allow students in one town to attend schools in another town.

The effort is almost certain to face legal challenges, including whether the municipalities have the right to form districts and whether they can claim school buildings within their boundaries.
