COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Omar Williams rushed for four touchdowns and a TSSAA BlueCross Bowl-record 322 yards Thursday evening as St. George's won the Division II-A championship 28-23 over University School of Jackson.
The title is the second for the Gryphons (11-3), who also won the 2007 crown.
Williams, who rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns alone in the first quarter, also collected a BlueCross Bowl-record 43 carries.
He was named the game's offensive MVP after piling up 322 of the Gryphons' 344 yards of offense. Those weren't the only records that fell.
USJ quarterback Ryan Garner threw 50 passes and completed 28, both TSSAA records, accounting for 252 yards. He was picked off three times.
Garner's receiver, Lee Mayhall, broke the BlueCross Bowl record for receptions with 16 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. Mayhall was also named the game's defensive MVP, recording 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
USJ (11-2) rushed for 107 yards, led by Adam Glassman with five carries for 53 yards and a touchdown. Chase Rushing also had a receiving touchdown, catching a four-yard pass for a score among his five catches for 30 yards. The Bruins had 359 yards of total offense in the loss.
