GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A retired Metro Nashville police officer has died when he fell off a ladder while replacing a faded American flag on a pole outside his home.

According to WKRN-TV, 50-year-old Randy Castell was killed Thursday when the ladder gave way and he fell and struck his head on the pavement.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said Castell was very patriotic and wanted to show it at his home in Goodlettsville north of Nashville.

Casteel worked for the Metro Police Department for 26 years and retired last May.
