PLANTERSVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Authorities say a vicious pit bull caused a school to be put on lockdown in northeast Mississippi until police killed it.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the dog had broken its chain and was roaming near Plantersville Middle School.

Authorities said no students saw the dog killed. The owner of this dog had another pit bull loose on the campus on May 3. That dog was captured by school maintenance workers.

Plantersville Police Chief Maury Schuh plans to ask city officials to pass a vicious dog ordinance.

Police killed two pit bulls April 17 after they broke into a house and killed a Great Dane. Schuh says wild pit bull mixes have killed a cow and calf that belonged to him.
