NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A latent effect of home foreclosures is about to spawn - mosquitoes.
Some of the abandoned homes have swimming pools that are no longer being cared for. In all cases, there is no longer a homeowner there to keep lawns cut and make sure rainwater isn't collecting.
The Tennessean reported the Metro Nashville Public Health Department drops larvacide bricks or grains into abandoned pools to keep down mosquito breeding. The insects can carry diseases, including the West Nile virus.
Landscaping fish ponds and hot tubs at foreclosed properties can also be breeding grounds, but so can bowls and pans that were left behind.
