JACKSON, Miss. (AP, abc24.com) - Nearly all parents of Mississippi public school children agree -- sex education is needed.

The Clarion-Ledger reports a study by Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University found that 92 percent of parents support age-appropriate sex education.

State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier said what makes the number impressive is it's difficult to get 92 percent of people to agree on anything.

This past spring, state lawmakers approved sex education for Mississippi's public schools, leaving it to districts to decide whether students will be taught abstinence-only or "abstinence-plus" education. The programs are to be in place by next fall.

It's amazing how many people are willing to abdicate their parental role.

"This past spring, state lawmakers approved sex education for Mississippi's public schools, leaving it to districts to decide whether students will be taught abstinence-only or "abstinence-plus" education." Wait, what? 92% want REAL sex education, yet it will still be abstinence based? Teens are going to be having sex. Its a fact. It was a fact when i was young, and when my parents were young too. Expecting people to adopt christian morals while never being raised in a christian household is never going to happen. Teach people the consequences (pregnency, stds, etc), its up to the parents to teach the morals. But expecting our teachers and schools to teach morality while avoiding anything christian based is impossible.
