NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation has increased its winter weather budget by nearly $1 million to $15.5 million.

TDOT said in a news release Friday it has more than 191,000 tons of salt and more than 1.6 million gallons of salt brine ready for use. Salt brine treats roads prior to a winter storm or can be used to melt snow on roadways when temperatures are around the freezing mark. Salt is applied to roads once snow has started to accumulate.

The department has three salt vendors to refill salt bins in all 95 counties.

There were salt shortages across the country last winter, including Tennessee, because of severe weather.
