(AP) - The Memphis Grizzlies currently sit fourth in the NBA's Western Conference and own the league's fifth-best record. That isn't stopping them from dealing their leading scorer.
A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the Grizzlies are sending swingman Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors for point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis. Another person familiar with the negotiations said the Grizzlies were in discussions with the Detroit Pistons to swap Calderon for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.
Gay is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds this season and is due $37 million for the next two seasons. Trading away Gay also eases a luxury tax hit due next season, while concentrating the team around center Marc Gasol and All-Star forward Zach Randolph.
Memphis coach Lionel Hollins had been lobbying to keep his five starters together the rest of this season.
Calderon is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists this season.
