MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis woman said a debt collector offered to take sex instead of cash to settle a debt.
Mia Dodson said she received a call from Nathan Higgenbottom. He claimed to work for DCA Law Firm and was trying to collect an old debt. Dodson said she doesn’t owe the money, but for the past a couple times a year a debt collector would call wanting the cash.
Dodson said this time, Higgenbottom left a message shocking message. She recorded the message left on the machine and played in for abc24.com.
On the tape Higgenbottom said, “If you cannot pay back with money, you can pay back with your body. That is what I am expecting from you.” He then left his work number and private cell phone. He went on to say, "My room is open 24/7 anytime. I’ll be waiting for your call. Let’s have a wonderful night.”
“Never in my life had I heard anything like that before,” Dodson told abc24.com.
“Obviously they are still in business. People fall for this stuff all the time,” said Kevin Snider, Dodson’s lawyer.
Snider said the caller violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act when he called Dodson repeatedly, before asking her for sex.
“Obviously paying off debts in exchange for sex is an illegal act to begin with,” Snider told abc24.com.
Snider plans to go after the company, but knows it will not be easy.
“It is difficult to track these companies down. Even if you get a judgment, you may never collect it,” said Snider.
