MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) – As the Memphis Animal Shelter prepares for its grand opening, workers have been told to shape up or ship out.

MAS Supervisor David Johnson used colorful language to get his point across, and his litany of profanity was all recorded.

ABC24’s Jeni DiPrizio has the tape, and The Truth.

If you listen to the 42 minute tape, it sounds like the supervisor might be trying to give employees a motivational speech were it not overshadowed by the constant cussing.

With a new shelter opening up, Memphis Animal Control workers were told higher expectations of them are now even higher.

Employees were told there would be no more hanging around doing nothing, they need to increase their call volume, take better care of equipment, and that playtime is over.

Employees say they're upset not about what was said, but how it was said. The supervisor swears so much, he even addressees it during the meeting.

On the tape employees admit morale is low, and they are not filling out memos or handling calls like they are supposed to. The supervisor says he's been protecting employees from getting in trouble.

I'm told Mayor Wharton doesn't talk to his executive staff like that. Lower level employees say the truth is, they deserve the same respect.

There are some great people that work at the shelter. We all know there are a few "doing the right thing" advocates. Should of had this conversation months ago.... Obviously, David is over the BS and the THUGS he was talking directly to that work there do not understand, Please and Thank You. I would of liked to have seen a boot up someone's $##$ out the door....and it's not David Johnson!< If you want to point fingers... look no further... Janet Hooks is just around the corner! Good Ole Mayor Herenton Days!!! Keep David... You need to toss Janet Mayor Herenton, I mean AC!

I'm pretty sure that if I recorded my boss speaking and then turned the tape over to the media I would be fired. These lazy-ass Memphis City employee's need to go. All these hippies who march and protest for the sake of these animals should go down there and steal these jobs away from the typical city employees. It's hard to believe the nerve of these hooligans to complain about hearing cuss words, when they probably have the same or worse curse words tatooed across their necks. Next time, go to your HR dept instead of the news.

These employees deserve no respect. Respect must be earned. You certainly don't get it by cooperating with dog fighters, abusing animals. Sure morale is low, because of guilt of criminals doing wrong. AC should fire them all, and to h-ll with the pitiful Union.

Once they bulldoze the shelter, the current employees could be transferred to the penal farm for employment. It would be a good match.

This shelter is the pet world version of Auschwitz. The animals in their care are destined to be put to death. How does one expect the "guards" to behave? Do they nurture and love the pet up until the moment of gas chamber? This shelter needs to be bulldozed and the city needs to donate some unused land to a no-kill shelter. Such a shelter could pay for itself with public support.

they deserve the same respect!! are u kidding me.. what about those animals... they deserve to be put in trash cans, not fed or given water, kept in a dirty cage and left for dead right.. give me a *bleepin* break like i said on another post i know plenty of people looking for jobs that care about animals and will care about those at the shelter but for some reason they want to employ people that are only there for the paycheck and could care less about what they are doing much like every other business in memphis... ever wonder why turnover rates are out the roof?? respect pfft
