MEMPHIS, Tenn. (University of Memphis) – The Memphis women’s basketball team took down UT-Martin, 90-69, on the strength of Brittany Carter’s 27 points, nine steals and five rebounds. Jasmine Lee (Bessemer, Ala./Jess Lanier HS) recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 boards, and Nicole Dickson (Greeneville, Tenn./Greeneville) notched her school-record and seventh consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers held a significant points advantage in the paint, 58-26, while connecting on 58.7 percent (37-of-63) of their field goal attempts. The Skyhawks were held to 33.8 percent on 22-of-65 shooting. Memphis improved to 7-1 on the year, while UT Martin dropped to 4-3.
Several Memphis players posted career-highs in the win. Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County High School) started the game 1-for-6 from the floor, but connected on her last 12 shots of the game. Her 27 points are a season-high and the nine steals are a career-high. Ann Jones added a career-high nine points. In addition to recording a double-double, Dickson handed out a career-high six assists.
Behind a balanced scoring attack, Memphis held a 45-30 lead at the break. Carter recorded eight points and five steals in the frame. Dickson matched Carter’s eight points, and Lee and Danay Collier (Bronx, NY/ John F. Kennedy) each added seven.
Memphis connected on 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) field goal attempts, including 4-of-10 (40.0 percent) on three-point shots, and held Tennessee-Martin to 9-of-30 (30.0 percent) shooting as well as 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
The 15-point Tigers lead was built on the strength of a 30-6 advantage in points in the paint during the first half.
Heather Butler paced the Skyhawks with 21 points. Millington Central High School graduate Jasmine Newsome recorded 20 points and a team-high four assists for UT-Martin, and Jaclissa Haislip led the team with eight rebounds.
The Tigers hit the road for their next four games. Tip-off against Arkansas-Little Rock is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT.
