Respite care is short-term care from a person outside the patient's family. Respite care provides primary care givers a break from the routineand often stressof caring for a family member with a disability or chronic disease. If you need respite care for a few hours a day or a couple of days a week, you can seek the services of a volunteer or an adult day care program. Often, respite care is covered by insurance. Your physician, local hospital, or a nursing home can give you more information about the types of respite care available to you and may even offer temporary nursing or medical services for their patients who need it.
