Zoning is simply a method of dividing your home into different areas that can be individually controlled with separate thermostats. If you're like most people, you don't use your whole house all the time. By setting your home up for zone control, you don't need to heat or cool the areas that you're not using. Bedrooms, for example, would probably only need energy at night, when the rest of the house doesn't. Zoning also enables you to adjust for different conditions. If the west side of your house gets lots of direct sunlight, you can save energy by reducing heat to those areas during the afternoon. Depending on the type of heating or cooling system of your house, establishing zones can be either simple or complex. Consult a professional to analyze your home's system to see if yours is a good candidate for zoning.
