MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Homes and businesses in Memphis, Shelby County and Fayette County could have to deal with delays to their trash pick-up after workers with Allied Waste walked off the job Monday morning.
The strike began at midnight. Workers are up in arms over what they call unfair labor practices. They claim the company often denies them overtime pay and safety bonuses.
“One week our check is something, the next week our check is different - so it’s like our money is constantly fluctuating. The more hours we work the less money we get,” said Edward Gorman.
Allied Waste, which is owned by Republic Services, is not commenting on allegations about unfair labor practices. It did release a statement saying the strike will cause delays but waste and recycling will be picked up. Its customers aren't so confident.
“Well they didn't pick up trash at Christmas time when there was a delay. It piles up, it gets thrown all over the place and you're out there picking it up,” said Linda Davey of the Cottage Restaurant.
Republic has its managers driving dump trucks until temporary workers are brought on board.
Meantime its real trash haulers say they're done asking the company to change - they're now demanding it.
"We're prepared to do whatever it takes," said striking worker Billy Taylor, "Whatever that is, we're prepared to whatever it takes."
In a prepared statement, Republic Services responded to the strike by saying, in part, "First and foremost, we want to assure our customers their waste and recycling will be picked up. There will be some delays, but service will be provided."
The company has its managers driving trucks until it brings in other workers.
