MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is driving around in a brand new Cadillac, and that has some city council members fuming.

The city is leasing Wharton's new 2013 Cadillac GTS for $1,200 a month.

Council members questioned if the mayor needed a new car; his old car was just three years old.

"I think it's not a huge amount of money but I think it sends a message from the top that we are really not serious about frugality and being good stewards of the taxpayer dollars," noted Memphis city councilman Kemp Conrad.

A spokesperson for the mayor says the new caddy was needed due to the amount of miles Wharton puts on the car every year.

He says, since taking office, Wharton has tightened up the take home car policy for administrators.

HAH - Needs a car because of the miles MY ____ !!! If he is truly worried about the financial situation, why didn't he get a small car that is good on gas, and can handle the miles ? This APPARENTLY is NOT a man concerned with taxpayers money. Obviously swag is WAYYYY more important to him than the city's dysfunctional budget. AC: "Let's close 21 schools and buy me a Cadillac ! That should balance the budget !"

Old AC likes to live high on the taxpayers money ! He doesn't worry about what the peons think about the way he spends their money ! With a $13,000 portrait on the wall of fame and now $1200 month for a fancy car....got keep up the image of the important mayor's position.Instead of looking good...makes him a smo in the eyes of Memphis taxpayers. Guess he likes rubbing all that stuff in their faces cause he can.

AC does not really have a frugal personality. He's more like: "I've arrived, and I want the big perks and the 6-figure-salaried lackeys." I like my friend AC, but that won't stop me from telling it as I see it.
