Councilman Lowery Proposes Renaming Forrest Park

Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery wants to rename Forrest Park. Nathan Forrest, a Confederate general, is buried at the park, and many in Memphis say the name should be changed because Forrest was a founder of the Ku Klux Klan. Lowery's idea is to name the park after Forrest and famous civil rights journalist Ida B. Wells.

Dear Mr. Lowery, your idea is repugnant to the nth degree! Stop it! How you ame up with that idea is beyond me. In your zeal to provide satisfaction for "people of all walks of life", you've managed to scare me with your ridiculous proposal. For a man held in such high esteem in some quarters of this city, you've managed to sound extravantly foolish. And to want to afix the name of Ms. Wells to that piece of ground simply borders on the insane. Stop it! You are really out of bounds and concievably starting trouble where none exists. Let that piece of ground be significant to those who choose it to be and do not get into a historical debate with them about it! I, for one, am to busy with today's problems to concern myself with the name of a park. History cannot be re-written and you really can't abridge it by simply afixing another name to it. Ms. Wells fight today would probably be to educate people, especially those in so called...high places! So just stop it!
