MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Three Mid-South families are dealing with the shock that their child could be connected to a string of Shelby County murders.
Lewis Gibson Sr., was in shock when a neighbor told him they saw his son getting arrested on Feb. 19. As the details of the case came out, his shock turned to heartbreak.
There's no question 21-year-old Lewis Gibson has been through his share of trouble. He stole a car as a juvenile and as an adult was arrested for aggravated assault. His father spoke only to abc24.com. He says, "I work. I wanted him to get a job, his high school diploma, be something before I die, because when I die it's all over, he's lost."
Gibson Sr., is terminally ill. He says he's been as devoted to his son as a single father can be. "I did a pretty good job on the raising but he just took up with those boys and I hate it."
Gibson is charged with helping Michael Dean and Ashley Carver rob and kill Valero worker, Leonard Davidson. "I don't believe he would do anything like that, he was with the wrong people at the wrong time," Gibson says.
Police say Davidson was lured to a vacant home by Carver; there he was shot, tied up, tried escape, then murdered. Then the killer crew burned his car. The details are difficult for this father to hear. "I cry every day of my life," Gibson says, "When I get up I'm crying, my body's crying."
Gibson lives just up the street from Dean's home but he says he never knew Dean, Carver, or the man still on the run, 18-year-old Demetreous Santiago. He wishes his son never knew them either. "I wanted him to be something good because I'm dying. I wanted him to have a good life before I leave off the earth. It looks like it didn't work like that."
At this point Gibson is only charged with facilitating Davidson's murder, but he could be implicated in more murders. Police say Dean is linked to four murders.
