MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis City Schools has named Dorsey Hopson as its Interim Superintendent, replacing Dr. Kriner Cash.

Cash's last day is January 31; Hopson will assume his responsibilities on February 1 until the district merges with Shelby County Schools to form the Unified School District. The merge will be official as of July 1, which is also the start of the fiscal year.

The school board agreed to buy Cash out of his contract earlier this year. He will continue in an advisory capacity through July. At that time, he will continue to receive his regular salary for six months. Cash will also get moving and legal expenses totaling $17,000.

Hopson stated after his appointment at a January 29 board meeting that he does not plan to pursue the superintendent's post beyond his interim term.

I thought the MCS gave up their charter and control of schools to the county. Why does MCS they need a superintendent if they are no longer solvent?
