MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com)- One man is dead, another injured and two Memphis cops are off duty tonight after a shooting in Raleigh.
It happened at the Gardenwood apartment complex in the 2600 block of Amy Lane early Friday morning.
Memphis police say one of the suspects is now in non critical condition. Police have yet to get a positive identification on the suspect who was killed.
“I was totally shocked about it,” Allen Norfleet said.
The shooting at the Gardenwood apartment complex caught many by surprise.
“As far as I'm concerned it's normally quiet around here,” Norfleet said.
The confrontation between cops and crooks ended at Gardenwood, but it all started at the Jennifer Meadow Apartments when a manager spotted burglars breaking into an apartment.
As they left, the manager called police and either undaunted or oblivious to the risk, trailed the suspects.
“If I was the apartment manager, I probably would have followed them too, but that's scary because you don't know who has guns and who don't around here,” Nate Carney said.
The burglars wound up at the Gardenwood Apartments where cops spotted them loading up stolen goods in a getaway car.
When the cops approached, the suspects tried to run them over.
"One of the officers shot into the vehicle shooting two of the suspects, both the driver and the passenger,” Sgt. Karen Rudolph said.
“It was comforting to me to know he was alright knowing that they was actually protecting our area,” Norfleet said of the officers.
The two cops are assigned to the Old Allen station. They've been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
