MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - There are no more traffic headaches on Madison Avenue in downtown Memphis.

Mayor Wharton helped remove the "ROAD CLOSED" sign at the corner of Madison and 2nd Street Thursday afternoon.

That portion of Madison has been partially closed for more than a year after parts of a nearby building collapsed. The hazardous eyesore was finally demolished last month; it's now an empty lot.

Mayor Wharton thanked business owners in the area for their patience. "The reason we wanted to do this is that we always have a big deal when new businesses come to town and open up, but we want to show that we give just as much attention and appreciation to our existing businesses."

Owners of the Madison Hotel, Walgreens and The Brass Door all attended Thursday's road re-opening ceremony.
