MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A woman is seeking justice after she says she caught a man abusing his dog outside an auto parts store in Berclair.

The incident happened outside an AutoZone on Summer Ave; the woman pretended to be on her cell phone, instead she was getting video of the whole thing.

The pit bull in the car next to hers caught Nelitza Merritt's attention. He was chewing and jumping on the driver's seat. She says she was trying to stop the situation when the dog's owner came outside.

In the video you hear her explain to the owner that she was trying to stop the dog from chewing the seat. She says, "When he got close to the car and saw what the dog did to the seat he became angry and bawled up his fist and he started punching the dog. As soon as he went into the back of the seat, he grabbed the dog by the neck and threw the dog to the seat."

Heartbroken, Merritt pleaded with the man in the Vince Young jersey. She said, "I can find somebody else, somebody that will want that dog." The man responded, "Oh no, it's O.K. I love him to death, but that's all he understands, it's O.K. It's fine, it's not abuse or anything, trust me."

Merritt's asking the police to get involved, but the car didn't have a license plate. She posted the video to YouTube, hoping someone recognizes the man. Her other hope is that the man who says this isn't abuse is watching. "I want justice done." She says, "I want him to realize what he did was wrong, if the police get involved I want justice."

Thanks to Channel 24 for airing this segment. We can only hope this alleged animal abuser was charged by MPD on state level charges... I have a sinking feeling that the Memphis Animal Services animal officer who was on scene was allowed to charge and as the vast majority of MAS officers charge city Div. 2 ($50 fine/no jail/no court order to not own animals) instead of having MPD charge state Div. 14(up to $2500 fine/court order to not own animals again/possible jail time/possible community service)this alleged abuser will walk away unscathed, to abuse again.

Please please do an investigation on this. Auto zone may have some security footage from that day with those men inside the store, or they may have had service done or something that police can use to catch this guy. He needs to know this is wrong and that this is animal abuse.

Please update story with WHEN this happened--DATE & TIME. Autozone is likely to have security cameras---inside & also outside, & you may be able to get a good photo of the man, since he went into the store. Police need to contact Autozone immediately to view any security video before it is erased or recorded over.

Wish more people would stand up for these defenseless animals. Hope someone recognizes him and he's punished.
