MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police arrested a man who was firing a gun on school property, hitting two vehicles and nearly hitting a pregnant woman.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired at Douglass Elementary School on Monday, November 26. When they arrived, witnesses told police a man ran between school buildings firing a gun. Officers spotted the suspect as he threw his gun and a pair of gloves while trying to run away, and apprehended him behind the school.
The suspect, 20-year-old Antonio Chalmers, told officers he had gotten into a fight with an unidentified subject near the school when shots were fired at him; he then fled, running across school property, while returning fire.
Investigators say two vehicles in the school parking lot were hit, and a pregnant woman went to the hospital to be checked after she dropped to the ground when she heard a bullet fly past her ear.
While Chalmers was being processed, officers conducting a pat-down found several small plastic bags of marijuana on him. Also, a check on the gun used by Chalmers came back as stolen. He has been charged with Reckless Endangerment, Theft of Property, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Vandalism, and Taking Contraband into a Penal Facility. He was booked at the Shelby County Jail on $15,000 bond.
