MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police arrested a man who tried to shoot his elderly mother in the head, then doused her home in gasoline while threatening to kill her.

Officers were called to the victim's southwest Memphis home on Tuesday, January 15. According to the police affidavit, 51-year-old Douglas Farmer became irate with his 87-year-old mother and pointed an assault rifle at her head and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed. Farmer left the house and came back with a gas can, dousing the home in gasoline and threatening to kill the victim.

Several days later the woman was able to call family for help while Farmer was away from the home. Family members got her out and called police. When officers arrived on the scene, the victim told them she feared for her life and her son wouldn't let her leave.

Douglas Farmer was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. He is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
