According to MPD, just after 12 this morning, Tony Newsom was arrested for impersonating a police officer.

Newsom, driving a black SUV with flashing blue lights in the center of the windshield and flashing high beam headlights similar to police vehicles, pulled over a man who passed him in the 5600 block of Elvis Presley Boulevard.

The man Newsom pulled over, however, was a Memphis Police Officer in full uniform. The MPD officer approached Newsom's vehicle to advise the suspect that he was an officer. The officer observed Newsom quickly putting his phone away that had flashing red & blue lights on its screen.

The MPD officer called for backup and the officers observed a "Shelby County Officer" sticker on the front windshield and one also on the rear license plate. They also located a Memphis Police Department patch on the dashboard of the vehicle that was visible through the windshield. Inside the vehicle, officers observed a Smith&Wesson gun box containing an empty holster, 17 loose 9mm rounds, a receipt for handcuffs, and even a sex toy.

Tony Newsom was using a smartphone with an app that has a "police lights" function that flashes red, white, and blue strobe lights.

He was arrested and charged with Criminal Impersonation, Illegal Use of Flashing Blue Light on Motor Vehicle, Improper Display of Registration, and Violation of Light Law. He is out free on bond and set to be in court on Monday, January 28th, 2013 for an arraignment.

Is ok. We have several Memphis Police officers who are just impersonating an officer.....but they are doing it legally and taking our tax dollars at the same time.

This is so sad! Stories like these is why God Is going to step in and “And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be.” (Psalms 37:10)I cannot wait or this day!!

@reasonjr: why would you blame law enforcement in this? they don't set bail or give conditions of release for someone charged with a crime, that is done by the judicial system. Law enforcement did their job in this incident, they locked up this clown!! I agree with all of these other posts, he should NOT be out on bail, but again, that was not the cops fault.

He really should not be out on bail! He more than likely didn't learn a lesson, and will continue to do this again.

But he is out on bail. Makes sense to me. Where is the pre-crime division when you need it?

Well, now I know why those who break the law continue to do so. I used to believe it was a problem with Judges in our Justice System, but now I have to blame law enforcement as well. When someone can impersonate a police officer and be allowed to walk until a court hearing, I'm not surprised that Memphis is at the top of the list as one of the most dangerous cities in America.
