MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A man was severely injured in a car accident while he was on the side of the road changing a flat tire Wednesday evening.

The accident happened near Winchester and Commerce just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6. According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a Toyota Camry had pulled over due to a flat tire and called a friend to come help. When the friend arrived, he parked behind the Camry and turned his flashers on.

While the driver was standing at his trunk, a Ford F-150 hit the friend's car, pinning him between the vehicles and severing his legs. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Michael Owens, was airlifted to The MED in extremely critical condition, and has since been upgraded to satisfactory condition. Owens lost both legs just below the knee.

The Sheriff's office is investigating the crash, but stated speed was not a factor. So far no charges have been filed.

It's always a Ford or a minivan or some idiot in an SUV, most likely with Mississippi plates, causing most of the accidents around Memphis. I suppose good drivers are a rarity among idiots.
