Memphis Animal Shelter to Practice Euthanasia on Animals

Critics don't like the sound of killing animals for practice, but like it or not, the training is mandated by law. Memphis animal advocates say it's what happens after training that needs to change.

PUT THE CAMERAS BACK WHARTON. Wharton said he would take our shelter from "Worst to First" - such a liar.

The part of the interview that was cut stated that MAS needs to focus on training for marketing these animals for adoption. What they do (don't do) is pathetic compared to other shelters, but then it takes people who sincerely care to make positive changes. I attended a seminar this year on turbo-charging adoptions & learned fabulous ways to create adoption events. THAT is the type of "training" that Mr. Rogers & his staff need to attend and then implement! Then there would be far less euthanizations. I'm sick & tired of the excuse that MAS is a municipal shelter with too many animals so they have to euthanize. The culture at MAS is one of killing animals - get them in the kill room & get er done as fast as possible. We learned that from the 2 scumbags that were abusing animals in the euthanasia room. If the Mayor and his administration were progressive leaders they would want to turn the shelter around. This would automatically give them the positive press they want for the shelter without them having to invent or manipulate it.

Well, I sure hope Dr. Coleman isn't teaching them - she recently killed a puppy with an IC stick. No sedation, no compassion, just a needle straight into the heart. The puppy wasn't ill or dangerous, btw, just committed the "crime" of nearly starving to death in MAS's "care" and was forced to eat his dead litter mate to try to survive. MAS could kill a LOT fewer animals if they made half an effort. But they don't keep Pet Harbor updated and current, so people looking for lost pets can't find them (but the staff will tell people that the records are current, which is demonstrably not true) and adopters can't view all available animals online. They don't market their animals in any organized or effective fashion. They take in feral cats just to kill them, rather than implement a TNR program. They don't contact breed rescue groups or allow all of their animals to be seen. It goes on and on. In short, MAS kills so many animals because it's the lazy way out. They'd rather fill their trucks with dead bodies than work to network animals properly and get them out alive. Friendly, healthy pets are slaughtered there every day because Mr. Rogers doesn't feel that getting animals out of the shelter alive is part of his job.
