MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A 5-year-old boy is recovering after being left on a Memphis daycare bus alone, locked in for hours. On Tuesday, the daycare was closed and no one was talking about the child's nightmare.
The windows of Kids School Daycare at 1126 Thomas were dark on Tuesday, and the buses didn't move all day. Kids School Daycare in northeast Memphis became the center of Alexis Jennifer's worst nightmare Monday night. "When I saw him screaming in that window, I was terrified," Jennifer says, "I was in disbelief."
Her son, D.J., was left locked in the bus until nearly 7 p.m. The child's father pried open a chain link fence and pulled his child from a cracked window to get him out of the locked bus. "He was in a state of shock, he didn't say anything to us, he shook his head no, yes, he looked very afraid." Jennifer explains, "he had peed on himself, it was just a terrible experience overall."
According to Jennifer the bus driver was a substitute. Memphis police say no arrests have been made, but they are investigating. The State Department of Human Services is also conducting an investigation. It's in charge of licensing and rating daycares.
Tuesday D.J. went to school, but he didn't ride the bus; he told his mother he never wants to ride it again.
