MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A football player from Millington Central High School died during practice Tuesday afternoon. School leaders say the young man died from an injury that happened on the playing field.

15-year-old Dana Payne was killed during football practice at Millington Central High School.

About 20 players were inside Le Bonheur Children's hospital saying their final goodbyes along with Payne's friends and family. According to a coach, Payne was running a pass pattern when he was hit by a defensive back, lost his breath, passed out and his heart stopped. He was rushed to Le Bonheur, but died before he arrived.

Friends say he loved football and loved to make people laugh.

Superintendent of Shelby County Schools John Aiken says it's a tragic situation and will offer grief counselors at the school for students, teachers and coaches.
