OLIVE BRANCH, MS (abc24.com) - Dozens of New Year's revelers got safe rides home courtesy of a Mississippi towing company.
The drivers used their trucks to keep people who drank a little too much off the roads. Their goal is to keep as many people as they can tow from drinking and driving.
"It was a long, long night, but it was a very good night," says Les Shirley.
Drivers at Lazer Towing spent a sleepless New Year's Eve, not ringing in 2013, but hard at work.
"Lazer Towing views New Year's Eve differently than most wrecking companies," says Zac Garner. He and Shirley offer a deep discount to party goers.
"We pull so many alcohol related incidents all year long that on New Year's -- the busiest days for alcohol-related incidents and fatalities -- we like to give back," Garner tells abc24.com.
For ten bucks, they take you and your car home. "Cabs can't touch us," Garner laughs.
Lazer Towing is based in Olive Branch, so their focus was on DeSoto County; but drivers made runs all the way up to Beale Street. The company's seven trucks averaged about 70 tows.
"That's a lot of people off the road," Garner says. "You're not just hauling one drunk person, you're hauling their friends. And they're still having fun. I heard a million times last night that this is the best idea we've ever had."
"We will be doing more holidays," Shirley adds. "We've got things in the works and are going to figure out more ways to do this."
"Anything we can do to save a life or try and make it safer for anyone, that's our goal," Garner agrees.
The two will do it again on the Fourth of July. They're also considering Memorial and Labor Days and possibly Christmas as well.
