MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Several different shootings took place in Memphis this weekend, including six on Sunday alone, and it has city leaders concerned.

Sunday's shooting death of a man at a home on Selkirk in east Memphis was just one of several shootings in what turned out to be a violent weekend.

City Councilman Harold Collins is well aware of the violence in Memphis. "It's troubling… it's all over the city," he said. "We need to look at how we can get these guns off the street."

At 12 o'clock Sunday morning a man was shot inside his car outside a home on Davis in north Memphis. Police later found him less than a mile away dead in the driver's seat.

Later on Sunday a shooting took place on South Lauderdale in south Memphis. Police say a dice game became violent after several men pulled out guns and started shooting.

It was just before five o'clock when police found a man dead at 6090 Selkirk. Then at 5:15, police responded to a home on Rockingham where a 16-year-old was shot. The teen was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in non-critical condition.

Right before midnight Sunday night a 15-year-old boy was shot after leaving Club Zodiac on Mt. Moriah. He was transported to The MED in critical condition.

With all the shootings and violence it seems like Memphis is out of control, but Collins disagrees. "I would never say our streets are out of control."

But he does admit something needs to be done. "Maybe we can challenge the U.S. Attorney and federal law enforcement to see what other resources we can get."

Most of these are gang members killing gang members. In those cases they are doing us a favor. They are like cockroaches and the more of them that are exterminated the better.

The city of Memphis is and has been out of control for years. The police force does not have their priorities in line. They are too busy transporting prostitues to Tunica, sitting on interstates hoping to catch a speeder, and just driving around fast for no reason without their lights or sirens. I witnessed a domestic assualt happen back in 2010 and two hours went by and not one cop showed up to the scene. It is a disgrace that shootings happen as often as they do here. Whether it be someone walking out of a club after having a fun night or a repo-man just trying to do his job to provide for his family. Crimes like this are unacceptable and blaming it on guns is irresponsible. The people who have these guns are the problem. If they didn't have guns they would have other weapons to harm people with. Until the streets are cleaned up and citizens of Memphis are made aware that this is unacceptable I do not see things changing. These bad people have to stat getting arrested and put away and our police force has got to stop turing their backs on these situations. Otherwise, not only this city but this country is going to be destroyed by hate crazed individuals that have no business on the streets.

So, what's new? Residents of Memphis, and visitors alike, are well advised to keep their sidearms close at hand while in the city. Motorists (and pedestrians) should keep a sharp eye out for recklessly operated police cruisers, with and withour their blue lights and sirens in operation.
