OAKLAND, TN (abc24.com) - Oakland, Tennessee Mayor Scott Ferguson resigned Monday, citing personal reasons, including an extramarital affair. Ferguson was re-elected last November having served as mayor since 2010. He took over after the previous mayor mishandled city business.
The city still has to accept Ferguson's resignation. Oakland's head alderman will be taking over the office. He said no one in the city knew about Ferguson's plans until he packed up and left.
Those living in Oakland wonder if problems in the mayor's office can be blamed on something in the air. Scott Ferguson makes two mayors in a row caught acting inappropriately.
"It must be contagious. They need to fumigate the city hall!" said Oakland resident Thomas Duncan. "When [Ferguson] came here we had a mayor under investigation at that time.
So now it's Chris Goodman's first day as Oakland mayor. Ferguson didn't tell city leaders about his plans.
"We're playing catch up; we're trying to understand where the town is," Goodman said. "[Ferguson] packed his office and left… the unfortunate thing is he didn't let any of the board know."
Goodman has heard Ferguson is leaving the state, heading to Arkansas. No one answered at Ferguson's house.
Goodman will take over the rest of his 4 year term, which ends in 2016. He said Ferguson's resignation may have been a surprise, but it wasn't unwanted.
"I respect him for what he did, not necessarily how he did it. There has been a strong public outcry for the activities of Mayor Ferguson."
The previous mayor of Oakland was convicted of official misconduct nearly three years ago. Investigators say Bill Mullins used his personal auto repair business to fix city owned cars, and he failed to report a $2,000 payment for the repairs.
Mullins was sentenced to one year probation. A judge also barred him from holding elected office for ten years.
