MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Applications for optional schools for the next school year won't be available until Tuesday, but parents are already lining up at the school board several days early to make sure their kids are at the top of the list.

"Yeah, it's 5 days - it's definitely worth it. Especially when you're taking the time to ensure your child is able to get a good education and it sets the foundation for the rest of their lives," parent Trey Lewis told abc24.com.

There are 44 optional schools within Memphis City Schools; any student within Shelby County can apply.

Applications can be turned in from January 25 through August of this year.

Parents are usually notified by mail regarding the status of their child's application within six to eight weeks of turning it in.

This is so silly for parents to have to spend nights in the cold. Either let them in some govt.building or let them sign the list and get a number. In this day and time there should be a better way than this !
