Search Called Off for Man Overboard in Mississippi River

WALLS, MS (abc24.com) - The search for a man who fell from a barge on the Mississippi River Wednesday night has been called off.

Crews were searching Bass Landing Thursday morning off Highway 61. He fell off the barge near Walls, Mississippi just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16. Emergency officials from Yazoo City and the U.S. Coast Guard were called in to help with the search.

It was initially thought that the man was wearing a life jacket, but the jacket was alter discovered in his room on the barge. According to DeSoto County EMA Director Bobby Storey, the man could not have survived the 39 degree water.

Authorities have not released his identity.
