MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Mid-South Pastors have some strong reaction to a stripper pole in the pulpit of an Ohio church. The pole is part of Pastor Mike Scruggs' sermon series called "Battle of the Sexes."
He says the pole is supposed to represent what men want.
Dr. Kenneth Whalum, Jr., pastor at the New Olivet Baptist Church, got a lot of attention when he posted the message, "Jesus said 'Bring me that ass.'" He says he understands where Pastor Scruggs was coming from when he decided to put a stripper pole in the pulpit.
"It's for the players, the pimps, hustlers, thugs, shorty's that strip for a living and cats that slang drugs," Whalum said. He told abc24.com, "I'm not gonna hate on that pastor at all."
But Dr. LaSimba Gray, pastor of New Sardis Baptist Church, thinks a stripper pole in the pulpit is out of line.
Gray says, "It's ill-advised to use those kinds of tactics." He adds, "Every once in awhile you have a few renegades doing something to attract attention."
