MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The presumed victim of a sexual assault on the University of Memphis campus has been arrested after investigators found she had lied about the attack.
University police issued a campus-wide alert to faculty and students on Tuesday, December 4 after a 19-year-old woman reported she was assaulted while walking on the 3600-block of Mynders around 9 p.m. Police issued a suspect description of a white male, 5'8", 180 lbs. with a muscular build, medium length brown hair and tan complexion, last seen wearing a pink and white button-up shirt with rolled up sleeves and blue jeans.
On Thursday, December 6, U of M police recalled the campus alert, stating in an email to faculty and students, "The on-going investigation has revealed that the incident did not occur as originally reported to the police and it did not occur close to campus."
Memphis police later stated the alleged victim, 19-year-old Anne Campbell, had fabricated the report and an attack never happened. She was arrested and charged with False Reporting.
