MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The search is still on for the attackers who shot three people in a drive-by outside a north Memphis elementary school. The students and staff are ok, but three other people were hit by the bullets. One is still in critical condition.
Neighbors tell ABC 24 News the crime is out of control. They say drugs, gangs, and prostitution run rampant in their community. Thursday’s shooting was the second one this week.
"It sounded like drums. Boom! Boom! Boom! I said oh my God! It was constant and my great grandbaby is in the house too. It scared her and my grandson,” said a neighbor Margaret Harden.
It was the all too familiar sound of gun shots in the 1300 Block of Bryan Street, near Hollywood and Chelsea. Memphis Police say it was a drive by shooting.
"It was a white Impala, I saw 2 men sitting in the car but I thought it was somebody going to pick up the kids from school,” said Harden.
Instead, bullets fired from the car went flying in front of a house; just three doors down kids from an elementary school hit the floor.
"I heard gunshots in the library,” said 7-year old student Jamie Skipper from Promise Academy. “Teachers just told me to sit there and wait but the police came in."
Skipper loves her school.
"My teacher helps us learn and she helps us a lot and we have fun,” said Skipper.
But outside of school it's not fun at all.
"There are drugs, prostitution, and gangs,” said Skipper’s father James.
All of it plagues this neighborhood. People fed up with the constant crime held a community meeting at the Douglas Center.
"Crime is at an all time high,” said community organizer Telisa Franklin. “Our streets literally look like a war zone and it's time for us to make a change."
If change doesn't come soon, neighbors say they may pack up their things and leave.
“It (shootings) happens every so often now and it's kind of scary. I think I'm getting ready to move,” said Harden.
Memphis City School Hollywood Success Academy was on lock down for an hour, which is standard procedure. Sadly, training the kids what to do if there's a shooting is standard, too.
Police have not released any names for the victims and no one is in custody.
