MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A letter has been sent to all employees of the Memphis Vehicle Inspection Bureau, stating their positions will be terminated later this year when the city turns over inspections to the state.

The letter states the positions will be abolished as of June 30 this year, due to the Memphis City Council's decision to cease funding for vehicle inspections.

According to the city's Chief of Staff, Bobby White, this will affect 33 employees, 13 of which are eligible for voluntary or involuntary retirement.

With the state taking over vehicle inspections, fees are expected to go up and inspections will likely be required for all of Shelby County. Currently, only Memphis residents are required to pass yearly inspections for license renewals.
