MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The woman responsible for hitting two pedestrians in the Cooper Young area turned herself in Monday morning, but she showed little, if any remorse when ABC 24 News went to get her side of the story.

Based on witness accounts and a picture of the license plate number, Memphis police tracked down the vehicle from the accident on the 600-block of Wicks Avenue in south Memphis on May 25. Investigators stated that the vehicle, a blue 2005 Ford Expedition, had damage consistent with the nature of the accident.

On May 28, the owner of the vehicle, 28-year-old Adrienne Spates, came in to the Traffic Office to give her side of the May 20 incident that sent Shannon Parker, 40, and Katherine Solaas, 22, to the hospital. Parker remains at The MED.

Spates told investigators that she did not know where the two female pedestrians came from, and that they were suddenly in front of her before she could take action. She said as soon as she hit them she got out of her vehicle to go help them, but when several people started running towards her yelling, she got scared for her own safety and fled the scene.

Abc24.com talked to three witnesses from the night of the hit & run. All three refuted the account Spates gave investigators that people were yelling and running towards her. One witness said the only yelling was after Spates took off running back towards her car.

Jonathan Hastings, who snapped this photo of spates' license plate, refuted that account last week. "When I was standing there, the girl who was driving the vehicle passed me, saw what was going on and took off running and I actually started running after her, but she was 10 paces ahead and I hit the ground."

When ABC 24 News went to speak with Adrienne about what happened, she said, "They shouldn't have ran in front of the street, they shouldn't have run in front of my car."

Adrienne Spates was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, failure to report a vehicle accident, and financial responsibility. She was issued a misdemeanor citation and is scheduled to appear in court June 4. Abc24.com talked with a criminal defense attorney who said it is possible charges could be upgraded in the coming weeks.

Spates is also the mother of conjoined twins, who were successfully separated in a landmark surgery at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital on August 29, 2011. The twins are now in the custody of the Department of Child Services after an emergency removal order in April. Her other children are currently staying with relatives.

IMO...I say she was wrong for leaving the scene of the accident. As far as some of the racist comments I'm a "Black American" and I don't care what color of the person that got injured her leaving the scene of the accident was just plain wrong whether they were black, white, Chinese, latino etc.. So please lets not make this about race. Lets see it for what it is right and wrong. Is she classy??? Hmm let me see "NOT" but I can understand with her being in this situation she was pissed off. As far as the public not liking her she probably doesn't care I'm sure she doesnt breathe air for the public to like her. With that being said she doesn't have to answer to us (The Public) only people she needs to answer to is the Judge and law officials and most importantly ask "GOD" for forgiveness and her victims. If I was in this situation thats all that would matter to me. IJS...

Both the driver and pedestrians share equal blame. The pedestrians were not crossing at the crosswalk, which would have exonerated the driver of wrongdoing if she hadn't coldly drove off and left them wounded. This should stand as a lesson to those who brazenly (and often drunkenly) dart across the street on Cooper without looking. Living in that neighborhood, I myself have come very close to hitting many walkers and joggers at that same spot. The driver should not have to cover the medical expenses, but she should face the charges of fleeing and serve every bit of that time.

Add up what it cost the taxpayers to seperate her conjoined twins (which were taken away by DHS) and the cost from the medical expenses from her two victims, and you are looking at over a million dollars. With her horrible gangta attitude, and her only being able to be charged with a misdameanor, let her serve the full 11 months and 29 days.

I heard about this case on WKIM this morning, and one of the hosts brought up an interesting point-What would have been the black community's response if the races of the pedestrians and driver had been reversed? I agree with the general tone of this thread about this woman, and she should in the least give up her license.

I'm just trying to figure out this woman's sense of entitlement. I thought pedestrians have the right to cross a public street. I got money says she was doing, what just about everyone I passed this morning was doing, and was paying attention to her phone, not the road...

How about caring about someone's life no matter who is at fault! Unbelievable.

I can find some sympathy for this woman. I've had several near collisions with pedestrians in the Cooper-Young area. People in that neighborhood have a very bad habit of walking/jogging/stroller-pushing/dog-walking in the street rather than on the sidewalk. If the pedestrians were breaking the law, then they should reflect that in the driver's sentence.

This classy act is raising two more kids that I'm sure will grow up to be great Memphis leaders!! I don't know if anyone ever told her... but when you are facing hit and run charges... You don't want to make the general public dislike you... Maybe she didn't think anyone watched the news or read the paper... By her incredibly intelligent comments I'm sure she keeps up to date on all the latest news and politics... She's sharp as a marshmallow! I'm sure she will be in Memphis politics in no time at all...
