MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A 10-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was shot during a late night home invasion.

According to police, the girl and a 35-year-old woman were shot after two men broke into their apartment and robbed them. Now neighbors are afraid the men will return.

Many residents in The Crossing at Fox Meadows apartment complex hid behind their doors, unwilling to talk about the shooting occurred on April 2. The few who spoke didn't understand what happened.

Apartment resident Jerrad Taylor said, "This happened out of no where. There have been a few rivals, but they're quiet, so why did it happen to them?"

Taylor lives in the building across from the bullet-riddled apartment. He said he heard at least eight gun shots. "I went over and I saw the lady, she was shot in the arm. Her son said she was shot four times. I talked to police they said she was fine, they did surgery this morning."

The 10-year-old girl was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Taylor said she used to play hide and seek in front of his building. "They call the little girl Dora, she plays right out here."

Police said the armed suspects went in to the apartment and forced eight people to the floor. They took cash then took off, but as soon as the door closed several shots were fired.

Taylor said he doesn't feel safe, "There's nowhere safe in Memphis, that's the way it is now."

Investigators are searching the apartment for clues, but the suspects remain on the run.

One suspect is described as a black male between 18-25 years old, 5'8", 150 lbs, and last seen wearing a red shirt and long blue jean shorts. The other suspect is described as a black male 6', 180 lbs, last seen wearing a white hat, t-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on these suspects is urged to call CrimeStoppers at (901) 528-CASH (2274).
