MEMPHIS, TN -- A 13-year-old girl got the fright of her life early Thursday morning. She was walking to school in Hickory Hill when a man tried to kidnap her.
The girl tells police the guy drove up, jumped out of his car and grabbed her. She was able to escape, but unfortunately, so was he. Cops are now searching for the suspect.
The kidnapping attempt took place near a walkway at Castleman and Teal streets around seven in the morning.
"A lot of kids walk to and from school, but I didn't hear anything about what happened this morning," says Monee Turnage.
"That's a real shocker for that to happen this morning," says neighbor Ye Lee.
"They're neighborhood kids, even across the catwalk they're neighborhood kids, just going to the school," says Landon Johnson.
The victim was walking south on Castleman when she says a burgundy vehicle pulled in front of her. She tells police the driver stopped, got out and grabbed her, but she got away.
"There's a lot of people here for something like that to happen," Lee says. "I don't know how that would happen. The school is right here, cops are usually around."
Thursday morning several officers searched for the suspect.
Officers are looking for a black male in his late 30s/early 40s. He's around 5'11 with a muscular build. The teen told police he was wearing a white and blue baseball hat, red jersey and jeans.
"I've been here 11 months," Johnson says. "This is the first time of any kind of trouble that I know of, but you never know. Nowadays people are kind of crazy like that."
Police are hoping someone knows something. There is a SkyCop camera on the bridge that's monitored by the Real Time Crime Center. It streams live video, but the attack wasn't in the camera's field of view.
