MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - There is strong support for Memphis City Council woman Janis Fullilove after she and her husband were hauled off to jail on domestic abuse charges.
"It is a domestic dispute and that was that, that's her personal opinion," said Elgen Newsome, who lives in Fullilove's neighborhood.
The latest run-in caps a long rap sheet that started in 1994 and has grown steadily since. So has her support among voters; it is a support that seems to only grow with every arrest.
"She has a clear mind when she goes to work, what happens other places - everyone has problems," said Roy Bailey, who lives in Fullilove's district.
The people who continue to put Fullilove in office love her, but outside her district, there are concerns.
"I think the repeated problems do reflect poorly on the city, and her, and I am hopeful she can address those situations and reverse the trend," said Councilman Jim Strickland.
abc24.com talked with Fullilove hours before her arrest and she seemed in good spirits.
Fullilove's husband, Vernon Chalmers, was also arrested. Both are due in court on Wednesday.
