MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Railroad crossings along Poplar Avenue in East Memphis are still causing bumpy rides.
Norfolk Southern has spent the past two weeks making repairs after a train derailment. Repairs are at least a month away from completion and drivers are feeling it.
Without those freshly paved crossings, drivers risk damaging their cars going over them.
“They were real, real bumpy. I was like, 'Oh my God,' I'm thinking I'm going to have to go get an alignment after I come across this,” said driver Shenna Black.
The bumpy ride comes from the freak accident on Norfolk Southern's rail line earlier this month.
Signs were mangled, debris scattered and tracks were severely damaged. Drivers have been paying the price with traffic delays and rugged crossings ever since.
“When I'm on my way to school and maybe I'm going a little faster than I should, I know it's probably putting a little wear on my tires,” Portia Jeffries said.
The City of Memphis says it will be reimbursed for minor damage to Poplar Avenue and a traffic signal following the derailment.
As for the bumpy crossings, final repairs will take weeks.
“I think that they just need to get fixed, because even if you're going slow you hit them and it just goes tat, tat, tat and your car gets all messed up,” Katie Nagel said.
Norfolk Southern is still investigating the derailment. A spokeswoman said they still have not figured out what caused the accident.
