MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) – Another Memphis sex party video has gone viral on the internet. There is serious community outrage about nightclub video from a group using the name “Team Taboo.”
But, online- where anonymity is a shield- there is support.
The first video that caused all the stir was from Saturday, June 23; despite denials from Team Taboo they had nothing to do with it, an abc24 producer discovered another video posted in March 2012 that was no less controversial.
“Just because you put a private label on it doesn’t mean that anything goes,” said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.
That was the Memphis Mayor’s reaction to the online viral video of the sex party hosted by “Team Taboo” at Club Elements.
On Friday, June 29, another video of an earlier sex party was posted on Team Taboo’s Facebook Page.
Those may be just some of many such parties that move around the city.
“To stay one step ahead of our vice unit,” said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong, “they move these week to week.”
Team Taboo was scheduled to have another party on Saturday, June 30 at the C&M Lounge, but once the owners of C&M discovered what Taboo was all about, they told abc24.com they canceled the party.
“When I saw what happened,” said Cedric Johnson, co-owner of C&M, “I was like- what? That’s crazy man.”
An abc24 viewer sent an email that read, in part: “There have been sex clubs in Memphis for as long as I can remember. There is Discretions: there is The Treehouse; and there is Genesis Club.”
The view from outside Discretions lived up to its name; there wasn’t much to indicate what might happen inside.
“I’ve never been inside, but I know it’s a nightclub,” Miles Raney told abc24.com, “and I’ve been told it’s for swingers.”
Raney assists in promoting wrestling shows in the building next door to Discretions.
The question remains: is private club activity illegal?
“It could certainly rise to the level of criminal behavior,” said Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.
But, judging by reaction on Team Taboo’ Facebook page, there is an audience. One poster wrote, “Never saw a party like that. Ya’ll off the chain.”
Another wrote, “I think I’m about to take a trip to Memphis.”
The owners of the C&M Lounge emphasized that in no way do they want to be associated with Team Taboo or the online videos, canceling on Taboo a week before the controversy came to light.
