MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis' top cop has more to say about the KKK. Police Director Toney Armstrong opened up to ABC 24 News about the possibility of the Klan marching on Memphis.

Armstrong is not OK with the KKK and what it stands for. Nevertheless, he says if the Klan rallies in Memphis, his officers will protect them.

"It's 2013 and as an African-American director I am interviewing about the KKK marching in this city," he said. "It's so disheartening. This is something I wish wouldn't happen."

The fact his officers will have to protect and serve the white supremacy group is also disheartening.

"90 percent of police work is things you find undesirable and things you certainly wish it was not your responsibility to do, and certainly this ranks way up there at the top of it."

The KKK is coming to Memphis because its members are upset about the city's decision to rename Forrest Park.

"They have the right to voice their opinions and they have a right to freedom of speech like any other citizens. That's one of the flaws of liberties and freedoms."

Forrest Park was named after Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

"It's just so sad that's how our city has to be represented."

Something else Armstrong finds sad is the attention the KKK is getting during Black History Month.

"Instead of sitting here talking about the accomplishments and great things African-Americans have done to contribute to the betterment of the world as a whole, we're sitting here talking about the KKK."

In 1998, the last time the KKK held a rally in Memphis, Armstrong was an undercover officer tasked to protect the group. He has concerns about any future marches.

"This time around it has the potential of being more volatile," he said. "I think this group representing the KKK made their intentions known to go armed during this demonstration, which concerns us greatly."

The date and location for the rally hasn't been determined. Armstrong promises whenever it's held, his department will be ready.

In other countries such as Germany and Greece, recent demonstrations of right wing extremists (Nazis and the Golden Dawn party) have been surrounded and shut down peacefully by civilians. It's a powerful message to send to young people--hate is not welcome in our town! Read more here http://rt.com/news/dresden-anti-nazi-protest-168/

The first amendment is not dead. The concept of the market place of ideas was never some weak right where one party got to shout its ideas out unopposed in public. Its meant to be a debate, thats how it evolved in Athens. People are supposed to argue in public with bad ideas and the public gets to decide. This whole idea of the KKK getting to rant undebated in a public square is proof our educational system has failed. Get out their and argue with them! It works. They are not equipped to argue their ideas in public. Big surprise, the KKK sucks at debate skills. The excel at violence but their will be a zillion cops to drag them off if they try that. That leaves argument. Don't simply be disgusted, go and argue with them like is supposed to happen in democracy. Make them support their ideas in the public park while yall argue back. Show in the market place of ideas they are bankrupt. The first amendment can be a dangerous weapon against bad ideas and logic when citizens actually use it.

Welcome KKK....Is Wharton (Onion Head) going to present the keys to the city as was done for Farrakhan? ANY business this city gets should be welcomed with opened arms....why the double standard?

I agree with this group on the issue of the renaming of the park - but not on much else. That said, the appearance of the KKK is no different than an appearance by Louis Farrakhan and his hateful anti-white rhetoric. Only when the racial double standard is eliminated in this country will there ever be a chance for any kind of racial unity.

Doesn't it trouble anyone else that Tony thinks that freedom of speech for everyone is a "flaw" in the liberties and freedoms?

Exactly Suburb. Has any one thought to just ignore these clowns. All they want is the attention you're giving them. What could look more stupid than a kkk rally guarded by police with no supporters? A bunch of knuckleheads on the other side screaming back at them.

They say the are coming, but the only way it'll be a HUGE problem is if others feed into their mess! Let them stand out there and march around their signs in protest...and go back to where they come from, if they don't get the uproar and attention they want they will leave!
