JACKSON, Miss. (AP, abc24.com) - Authorities are investigating two shooting deaths on Mississippi highways and are concerned that someone may be posing as a law enforcement officer and shooting people who pull over.
Lori Anne Carswell, 48, of Hernando was found near her car on Mississippi Highway 713 in Tunica County on May 8 about 2:15 a.m. Thomas Schlender, 74, of Raymond, Neb., was found in his car on Interstate 55 in Panola County on May 11 about 1:30 a.m.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Director Larry Waggoner said Monday in a statement that authorities are concerned that someone is posing as an officer and shooting people.
"There's been instances where a vehicle described as a white unmarked Crown Victoria attempting to pull people over," said Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance, adding some have reported a gold Crown Victoria.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said if they're concerned that someone pulling them over is not an officer, they should turn on their hazard lights, drive to a well-lit, populated area and call 911.
