MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Catholic Diocese of Memphis announced Thursday that Bishop Byrne Middle and High Schools will close at the end of this school year.

The closure comes as part of the Diocese's initiative to enhance academics at Memphis Catholic Middle and High School. The Diocese cites increased maintenance costs and low enrollment as reasons for closing the school.

This year's seniors at Bishop Byrne will be the last graduating class from the 46-year-old Whitehaven school. 7th - 11th grade students have been encouraged to apply at other schools operated by the Catholic Diocese of Memphis: Immaculate Conception, Christian Brothers, Memphis Catholic, St. Agnes Academy and St. Benedict at Auburndale.
