MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The workshop, called "Build A Webpage In A Day," showed African-American girls from around the Mid-South the basics of building websites. They covered web coding with HTML and CSS, as well as basic web structure.
It was the first of its kind in Memphis, presented by an organization called Black Girls Code. Their mission is to increase the ratio of women of color in STEM professions by introducing programming and technology to African-American girls. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Founded in 2011, Black Girls Code has educated 800 girls in 16 different cities so far.
"Girls and African-Americans are two of the most under-represented communities when it comes to science and technology, engineering and math. And in Memphis, our single largest demographic is African-Americans and females," said Black Girls Code representative Meka Egwuekwue.
